“…my fascination with Elizabeth lies not with what she did in her reign, but how she came to do so... How did one of the most beloved figures of British history assume a throne that, less than a century before, would have been unthinkable to pass to a woman?”

Royals or Rebels: the Making of Queens in Britain 1460-1560

University of Notre Dame History Honors Program

Emily’s senior thesis “Royals or Rebels: the Making of Queens in Britain 1460-1560” is the result of a life-long fascination with the Tudor period. Over the course of nearly 70 pages, she examined how Elizabeth I’s queenly ancestors—Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York, and Anne Boleyn—shaped the role Elizabeth would one day inherit as regnant. She utilized the concept of queenmaking to evaluate how “the circumstances in which a woman both becomes queen and shapes the role after her ascension” defined their position as queen for Elizabeth to reference in her own reign.

Her thesis received an “A” mark.
